The zombies were out in force at the Alice in Zombieland party hosted by Z-Edge Tattoo and Piercing. Well known local model and host, Coraline Blue interviewed a few zombie killers. Her sister Audra Alexopoulos, owner of Z-Edge, served as MC for the Costume Contests. Guests were entertained by burlesque troupes from Pin Up Americal, pole dancer Cherry Von Topp and 4 SW Florida heavy metal bands.

Alice in Zombieland was the kickoff of Halloween in Sarasota. This party, presented by Z-Edge Tattoo and Piercing and Punk Rock Betty, set a high water mark for upcoming events. An edgy fashion show, sexy pole dancing, costume contests, live bands, DJ’s and a burlesque troupe made this event the place to party on October 16.

Punk Rock Betty put on a sizzling fashion event at Pastimes Pub. Summer of Sin was a show of her latest alternative clothing designs. Edgy models with cutting edge styling walked the runway surrounded by a crowd of fans and photographers. Even during the summer, creative people continue to find venues for great things to do in Sarasota!

The Loft Christmas in July in Sarasota
Santa and his helpers visited The Loft Ristobar last weekend to help Veronica Pastore, DJs Jimi-O and KCONN celebrate Christmas in July. You didn’t think Sarasota had summer nightlife? Take a look at the video, it may change your mind. By the time I left this huge nightclub it was packed. In addition to music and dancing, party-goers were contributing to charity since 10% of the sales all night were donated to Suncoast Charities for Children.

Sarasota Film Festival – Best Documentary – Better This World
Better This World was written, directed and produced by Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega. It is the story of David McKay and Bradley Crowder, two young political activists. While under the influence of an older charismatic revolutionary, the two were arrested for domestic terrorism during the 2008 Republican Convention. The movie looks at what happened between the three men. Accepted as an Official Selection in over 20 film festivals, Better This World won three “Best Documentary” awards in Sarasota and San Francisco. This interview with the filmmakers was conducted during the Sarasota Film Festival.

The movie examines how the “war on terror” after 9/11 has impacted civil liberties and political dissent in the US. Better This World will also be broadcast on P.O.V. on PBS on September 6th.

Sarasota Florida Bikini Content
As part of the Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix in Sarasota, Florida – there was a bikini contest to crown “Miss Super Boat Grand Prix”. The contestants modeled and danced for an enthusiastic crowd. The event was part of the 27th Annual Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Festival benefiting Suncoast Charities for Children.

Sarasota Towles Court Kite Day Fun
Children and adults had fun making kites at Artists on the Court, a new gallery in Towles Court. Since things to do in Sarasota slow down during summer, this free community art event was a welcome activity.
Kathleen Johnson invited the community to come and help decorate her gallery by creating kites to decorate the gallery on opening night.

Families with children can create colorful and whimsical kites to display around the outside of Artists on the Court, a new member operated gallery consisting of 14 local artists exhibiting their artwork. Video of the event will follow on SarasotaUpclose.
Sarasota Pop Rocks Party
Sarasota Pop Rocks Party was billed as the “party of the summer”. A combination of costume party, birthday party and fund raiser, the event was organized by Mike Drobny, Veronica Pastore, and Jawara Gordon. Pop Rocks was hosted at The Loft Ristobar with music supplied by Deejay Simplisstick and DJ Imminent.

Siesta Key Corona Wide Open Beach Volleyball
Siesta Key, the #1 rated beach in the country, was the first stop on the Corona Wide Open elite beach volleyball tour. This tournament with a $50,000 purse was the first of four events leading up to the US Open of Beach Volleyball. The event, which drew top professional players in both men’s and women’s divisions, was sponsored by the Sarasota County Sports Commission, a division of the Visitors and Convention Bureau. Several teams included local area players. Beach volleyball is fun and exciting to watch, plus it’s free! Two more tournaments are planned in June, so come on out and see them!
